Parties and my dirty little secret

Sunday, April 16, 2006
Yesterday we went to a birthday party for my husband's bestfriend's daughter.

Since it is a holiday here most people are away so their was only family really there.

The mother hired a babysitter for the kids so they could play in the back. But the mom had her hands full serving cake and coffee to the adults. And then abendbrot(evening meal) to the adult guest. She packed nice bubbles and tops(along with the candy) into the giftbags. The little ones are out playing with them now.

Well someone said the K word.(kindergarten) And I could see my hubby trying not to say. That's nice. She won't put them into kindergarden. I sorta stayed next to hubby all afternoon. I was not sure what to talk to the others about.

I've just realized that I am very different then them.(Or maybe it is just my thinking.) but what do I have to talk to them about. How can I start a conversation without insulting someone? The German school system that is boxing my oldest son in or how I am not putting the little ones in kindergarden. How do I explain the latter in my broken German. I consider myself a libertarian. Most people here are socialist. Even my form of Christian is different than most.(Not that most people are christians here.) For as bad as it sounded I did enjoy myself and I know the kids did to.

Batized Pagan Spring Holiday

Let me start my asking what do eggs and bunnies have to do with the death and ressurection of the son of God?

I don't do much for this holiday. I don't buy the kids chocolate. Normally I don't buy anything at all, but I saw this very, very large duck for 5€ and could not just pass it up.
I don't have to worry about the kids missing out. Oma(Grandma) and her sister buy more than enough chocolate for all. In fact, after seeing all the chocolate, I was wondering if we new any poor folks to donate it to. The kids also get presents for Easter here too. The got a Bobby car. It is a riding toy. To bad it is still raining so they have to play with it upstairs.

We went out for dinner. Greek. I had a wonderful dish with beef and lamb. No cheese in site. I guess it was kinda kosher. I also had matza for dinner. Trying to stay away from pork is really rough in German.

All in all a great day. Got the playroom clean this evening and trying to get GKS to sleep up here to night. I doubt it will happen.

Interesting Homeschoolers

Thursday, April 13, 2006
I will be adding blogs of homeschoolers for a while.
They will be one of three catagories.
Black, single parent or outside of the US.
At this time I do not homeschool,(it is not legal here) nor am I single, but I have been a single mother.

I like to have ammunition when people throw the idea back at me.
Many think HS is only for very religious white families who want to keep their children locked away from the world.
But this is not the case. Yes, black folk HS also.
This is my next addition to my collection of blogs.

In Heidelberg

Sunday, April 09, 2006
We are here in Heidelberg.
GTH is off to the States this evening for two weeks with his father.
Hubby then goes back to Nürnberg so he can work till Thursday.
Still getting hell for not putting the kids in kindergarden.
I can handle his mom. She states her option and leaves it at that. She does not fight or argue. This is going to be a rough 4 years.

Today is Thursday.

Thursday, April 06, 2006
This is talk bad about German school system day.

GTH gets out at 11:15 and then has to be back for an Ethiks(ethics) class at 1:30.
So my day is shot. I can not go in the city to buy a needed birthday present and I can't go anywher later bcause he gets home at about 3:00.
I get no real time with him, because in the inbetween time he has to eat and do homework.

Did I tell you his teacher only corrects tests. They correct each others class and homework. I don't think anyone has looked in his workbooks.
You see these are not part of his grades. It is only the tests that go into his grades. Well, how many are there? Well, all tests are written. They do not believe in multiple choice tests. They start in November and they come in groups. he report card he received in Feburary is from a group of test about 12 maybe 15 for each subject.

Ending not so good

Well, the merger between Lucent and Alcatel has begun. They will operate as two seperate companies for the next 6 months to a year.

The day was going pretty well: I got the kids dress and everyone ate breakfast.
The shelving was put together, but one was not correct.
I read two stories to the kids(in English).
I got out a few emails. And found somestuff on Charlotte Mason that I really want to take my time and read. I don't think this program is for me. I like the idea, but I am not the orginized Victorian. Plus, GTH has a problem reading things that do not intrest him.
GTH gave me a few of his tests. The Math is good. A solid 2(B). The German is the problem. He brought home a diktat(dictation) with a 4(D). This is the heart of the problem. Where do we go from here? Well he now has Haupschule(lower school) grades.
He can take a test for Gymnasium(Higher school) or Realschule(middle school). They are given on the same day,but there is a second date. so if we put him in the Gymnasium test first and he fails, will he be up for the Realschule test.
Yesterday was not a good day.

Not a bad day.

Wednesday, April 05, 2006
The days have been ok.

The last two days GTH has gotten in to Europe Go. I got this from Five Home Ed in Kent Gregory is learning alot about the EU. I am not sure what since it is in German. I guess I will have to make an account for myself in English. It is to bad there is not a Parent/Teacher mode so you can see how well your child/children are doing. Hook all the children into one overseer account so you can see with just a few clicks.

The guy from XXXLutz came today. So we now have the shelving and draws for under GTH's desk, but the shelves for the others bedroom is not correct. My long awaited bookshelf that was suppose to go on the wall is not here. So I have to put the books away again. So I can again have no clue what books I have.

I have decided to get educational games for the kids birthday coming up. They really don't need anything else except for playdoh. I am going to have to start planning birthday parties. What joy.
